Nauvoo Temple Keys
   The inscription says, "Keys to the Old Mormon Temple. Upon departure of the Mormons from Nauvoo, these keys were given to Mr. Artois Hamilton by the Elders of the Church, for safe keeping, and in appreciation for the tender care Mr. Hamilton gave the bodies of Joseph and Hyrum Smith after they were killed in Carthage, Illinois on June 27th 1844.

Nauvoo Temple keys are believed to have been made by Peter Shirts, a resident of Nauvoo in the 1840s and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These keys are on display by appointment only at the Quincy Historical Society in Quincy, Illinois.

Located 47 miles from Nauvoo at the historic Governor John Wood home, the Quincy Historical Society has many beautiful historic items on display. It is open weekdays between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Central Time. The John Wood Mansion is open for tours Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. During the July and August it is open daily from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. For an appointment call 217-222-1835.
